Earth Day: The Vire au vert coalition is calling for provincial elections to be connected to the "urgent needs" of Quebecers

Published on

MONTREAL, April 22, 2026 – For Earth Day, the Vire au vert coalition of 24 environmental and civil society organizations, is outlining its expectations and priorities for Quebec’s upcoming electoral campaign. The coalition is proposing a series of orientations and action areas for political parties to include in their platforms, in order to help build the resilience and the autonomy that Quebecers need in this period of climate and economic instability.

Reconnecting politics to people’s needs

For Vire au vert’s member organizations, the environment is not just one issue among many. Addressing environmental issues is key to responding to daily concerns and urgent needs: the cost of living, health issues, the quality of our living environments, and the future we want for our children. Quebecers need concrete solutions.

"What we’re proposing today are meaningful, necessary, and promising solutions to make Quebec more resilient in the face of economic, energy, climate and health crises," stated the coalition members.

Quebec has historically demonstrated its ability to innovate and to act boldly. With a development model that serves our needs, we can leverage our strengths and better overcome current challenges.

"We must take care of our territory, strengthen our democracy and ensure the sustainable use of our collective resources in order to reinforce our autonomy and our capacity to handle crises in the face of economic, sociopolitical and climate upheavals."

Orientations ready for use by political parties

The coalition is presenting all Quebec political parties with a series of orientations to help guide the development of their future electoral platforms in line with current challenges.

Specific action areas have been identified by Vire au vert member groups, such as: establishing a registry for all water withdrawals for better management during droughts; increasing public access to lakefronts and riverbanks to promote outdoor activities; and simultaneously developing housing and sustainable mobility projects to effectively address the housing crisis and reduce traffic congestion.

For the coalition, how we decide to use our water, air, agricultural land, and energy - our strategic resources - is not only decisive in positioning Quebec on the national and international stage, but is central to ensuring a healthy, viable, and sustainable future for all Quebecers.
