Stop the federal government's rollbacks on environmental protections
The issues
On May 8, the federal government published a discussion paper that signals major rollbacks of Canada’s environmental protections in order to speed up authorisations for large-scale resource extraction, processing, and transportation projects.
In response to public pressure, the government has extended the consultation period until July 22, 2026. Following this consultation, a bill will be introduced in the House of Commons, and it is expected to be passed quickly.
This reform to facilitate major projects goes even further than the controversial Building Canada Act (Bill C-5), as it would apply not only to so-called projects of national interest, but to a wide range of major projects (pipelines, mines, nuclear power plants, etc.). The reform includes all sorts of changes that would jeopardize Canada’s environmental safety net, exposing our environment, our water, and the most vulnerable species to significant risks, for the benefit of polluting multinational corporations. There is nothing good about what is being proposed.

To the members of the Consultation,
I am writing to you today to express my outrage in learning that the government is considering dismantling environmental protections in order to expedite large-scale national projects.
Environmental assessment is not an obstacle to be circumvented. On the contrary, it is a safeguard to ensure that projects respect our communities, the environment, and our health, and that they benefit the local economy.
Putting our environment, our oceans, our rivers, our lakes, and our most vulnerable species at risk in order to allow for the development of fossil fuel megaprojects (such as pipelines), mines, and other resource extraction projects makes absolutely no sense and does not help build a strong Canada.
Climate change is having significant impacts. Wildfire season is upon us once again, the heat will soon become unbearable in some cities, and animal species are disappearing at an alarming rate. It’s our health, safety, well-being, and economy that are at stake, as we deal with the societal and financial costs of the consequences of climate change.
I am not opposed to economic development, so long as it is evaluated with comprehensive environmental, social, and economic assessments, and that it respects communities, helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protects biodiversity, while addressing current issues such as the housing crisis, the cost of living, and the cost of food.
