Our dependence on cars not only damages the environment, but also our health, our wallets, and our quality of life.
The trend is toward an increase in the number and size of vehicles. Even though some habits have changed, the distances between home, work, and services remain too great to encourage active or collective modes of transportation. Cars remain dominant when pedestrian, bicycle, public, and shared transportation networks are insufficient. Stagnant ridership and underfunding of public transportation in Quebec and Canada limit services, reinforcing the demand for roads and parking lots that perpetuate urban sprawl and hinder sustainable mobility.
Breaking this cycle is possible: it is time to invest differently and dare to take initiatives that increase sustainable mobility options for quieter, healthier, and more humane living environments.
