Montreal, May 27, 2026 — Équiterre commends Steven Guilbeault’s years of service and commitment to the people of his Laurier—Sainte-Marie riding, to public service in general, and for the environment in particular.
Steven Guilbeault’s decision is the logical conclusion to a series of announcements by the federal government to dismantle environmental protections, focusing on fossil fuels as a path to economic recovery. We commend him for standing by his principles.
Prime Minister Carney has chosen to align himself with the perpetually dissatisfied advocates of the oil industry, such as the Premier of Alberta, rather than backing those who are working in good faith toward the energy transition. This is a choice that comes with serious consequences, and will do nothing to resolve the economic hardships caused by the trade war waged against us by the U.S. administration.
There is another path forward. Much of the world is shifting toward renewable energy, which provides greater resilience in the face of crises, with proven environmental benefits. The risk is significant that Canada will miss the boat.
In Davos, Mr. Carney said that if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu. It’s clear that the environment is neither on the cabinet’s agenda nor on the Liberal caucus’ agenda. For the Prime Minister, it’s no longer enough to refer to his former role as UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance. He must now take concrete action, because the veneer of the “green banker” has begun to crack.
