The US government's dismantling of the rules of trade and international cooperation has thrown governments into disarray the world over. And Quebec is no exception.
Acting out of fear, our politicians have chosen to weaken environmental policies and regulations as well as the mechanisms of public participation. They have also opted to sideline democratic institutions.
This is not the path to making Quebec more resilient and autonomous.
On the contrary, it is by valuing our land, using our resources sustainably and strengthening our democracy that Quebec can stand apart and ensure the security of its citizens.
Falling in line with the policies adopted south of the border will by no means ensure our prosperity. Rather, it will make us more vulnerable. In years past, Quebec took bold, intelligent action with a view to achieving resilience. Now is certainly not the time to go backwards. We must forge ahead!
It is with that in mind that the Vire au Vert coalition is approaching the upcoming provincial election campaign. We are urging the various political parties to prioritize themes and solutions that benefit the Quebec population and that will ensure the future of their children and of their communities.
That is the only way we can turn today's challenges into sources of hope.
